General Meeting of the Villages Woodshop Club

                                        April 12, 2016

                                Laurel Manor Recreation Center

 

President Jim Spallone called the meeting to order at 7pm accompanied by the recitation of the pledge of allegiance.

 

 Welcomed new members and visitors. There were five new members and two visitors in attendance.

 

President’s Report

 

Jim Spallone, President

·         We have had 48 new members join in 2016 bringing our total membership to 857. There are 8 members waiting to be certified.

·         The shop cleaning of March 18 and 19th was a big success. Tom Ribaudo and Debbie Larouere did an outstanding job organizing this endeavor.  Debbie Larouere spoke and said that she took observational notes during the cleanup and reports with the number of volunteers and level organization that the annual shop cleaning could possibly be completed in one day.  Special thanks to Cindy Bloecher who undertook cleaning the restrooms. 

·         Ringmaster Tool:  Due to the recent misuse of the ringmaster tool, Bill Ahlgren will be the lead for this tool and will have the following responsibilities: Establish and document, set-up procedures, usage procedures, identify and train instructors, set-up safe storage of the machine and set-up classes for the Fall coordinating through Bob Matthews. 

·         Housekeeping Issues:  The parking lot stripes have been repainted.  The fan-motor in the restrooms has been replaced. A-1 Fire has updated fire extinguisher and replaced five of them. Lady-Lake reports that the upgrading of the golf cart path is scheduled and will be done soon. 

 

 

Department Reports:

 

        Vice President – Harm Borfitz – No report.

 

Shop Administration – Jim Spallone for Dave Adamovich: The $1559.00 new Grizzly Shaper is to be delivered on Thursday.  Cutter heads have been ordered for doing raised panels, as well as cut valves for the vacuum system for the Shaper in the amount of  $1,090.43.  The new conveyor belt on the dual drum sander has caused the speed control to speed up the feed and a new part (under warranty) has been ordered for the speed controller.  The large sander valve, which slowly oscillates, has worn out and a new valve has been order, anticipated delivery day unknown.  Delta Drill Press spring broke, as result of normal wear, difficulty in getting part from Delta, working through a third party two get two new springs. 

 

Certification and Training – Dick Bessler:  Next date for certification is May 5th. Reminder, that monitor training are the first and third Wednesday’s of the month.    The Mentor program needs more mentors.  Presently there are eight members who need certification. 

 

Lumber – Kevin Vanscoy for Stephan Yovan: No report

 

Office Administration – Anne Bell:  No report

 

Member Merchandise – Bob Bell:  No report

 

IT – Mike Borfitz:  Will Riveria and Joe Busa, who have Access experience, will be working with Dick Hartley, as his back up/support.  John McGowan and John Scott who have hardware background will be working with Bill Pappas, as his back up/support.

 

 

Special Projects- Han Zassenhaus: The Special Projects pre-made items in 2016 to date are 691 items and sold for $4,489.10.  Special projects submitted in 2016 to date is 194 of which 13 were cancelled and 4 are on hold.  162 projects have been completed resulting in 309.35 hours worked, $862.35 in material used and donations of $3,401.05.

 

Toys – Conway Williams: As of the end of the month 1574 toys have been made and 1232 have been shipped with a donation value of $8820.00.  Toy department received two large truckloads of oak from a member’s widow (Mrs. Nelson).  The oak is of furniture quality and will be sold in the Lumber Shed with proceeds going directly to the toy department.  Toys will be sold on The Square (Spanish Springs) on Monday April 25th.

 

 

Video Equipment/ Videographer - Tom Miller: Bob Behrens has built a large cart for the equipment for easy access and mobility. The screen has been moved closer to the demonstrator’s work area. Some of the old equipment has been sent out for repair. Tom has identified a member with professional videographer experience to interview as volunteer videographer for the Club.   

 

Urn Project – Tom Miller: There is a tentative project in the upcoming month.

 

President Board of Directors Bill McGinnis: Thanked Debbie Larouere and Tom Ribaudo for excellent job with the shop cleaning. Bill asked that we all work to keep the shop clean and that the Carver’s area is the face of the shop for visitors.

 

Education Bob Matthew: No report

 

 

Turners – John Herega: The next turners meeting is this coming Tuesday at 7pm.  Ron Browning will be demonstrating how to turn two rectangle square platters with a social hour following the demonstration.  A How to Sharpening Video has been produced illustrating the proper use the grinders and how to properly sharpen lathe tools.  The Club is no longer using the Ellsworth sharpening method and is using the One-Way System instead. There were too many errors using the Ellsworth method.

 

 

Safety – John Herega: The “Need Help Ask Me” buttons has been rolled out.  Members are using compressed air to clean the machinery and themselves. This is a hazard, because particles are been sent into the air duct system and particles could lodge into an eye or skin as a result.  This is not a good practice. Air hoses should be used to a minimum.  There is a new training video demonstrating the proper use of the dual drum sander.

 

New Business

 

Bylaws – Bob Rosen: Announced that on February 25, 2016 the Board of Directors approved the following amendments to the club’s bylaws:

 

Sec.4.5.7 change from President to Chairperson; Sec. 5.1.5a adding section b to read  “ Have the authority with board approval, to appoint any such assistants necessary for the efficient operation of the club. Sec 10.1 adding “ or his or her public relations liaison.

 

These amendments have been posted on the website since February 27, 2016.  Mr. Rosen called for a voting by the General Membership. All were in favor, none opposed and approved unanimously by all. 

 

Jim Spallone announced a short break at 8:00 pm with the meeting to resume at 8:10pm. All were reminded folks to purchase 50/50 tickets.

 

Announcement by member, Linda Samson:  Regarding the Ladies of the Woodshop Luncheon and Pool Party on April 27th.

 

Announcement by member, Ken Vanderloop with a heart felt goodbye until next fall.  Jim Spallone wished all seasonal members safe travels home and we look forward to their return in the fall.

 

Show and Tell Items: Debbie Larouere shared a photo’s of the Adirondack chair she built with the help of Tom Ribaudo based a pattern she modified.  John Herega showed his “root” bowl made from a twisted pine tree.  Tom Miller showed his two Ring Master bowls.

 

50/50:  Ron Gammon reported that $106 was taken in for the 50/50 raffle, with $53.00 to the club and $53 to the winners
