The Villages Woodworkers Club

August 11, 2015

Laurel Manor

The meeting called to order by President Mike Borfitz.

The Pledge of Allegiance was said and a moment of silence was observed by all members.  We remembered Jack Hopkins, who passed away.

Members and Visitor Tally:

Jim Browning was visiting after he had toured the woodshop.

We now have 856 members.  Three members are awaiting certification.

Important Dates:

The 2015 Christmas party will be December 12th at Savannah Center and we will have 3 rooms.

The 2016 Colonial Days is on January 19, 2016.  We will have an evening or two to build card holders for the occasion.

The 2016 Christmas party will be December 10, 2016, at the Savannah Center and we will have 4 rooms.

We need a manager for the 2015 Christmas party.

IT Committee Overview:

This committee was formed to look at the club’s IT needs and find the best way to meet those needs.

The committee was chaired by Ray Roberts and included Ed Ott, Dick Hartley, Hans Zassenhaus, Anne Bell, Steve Yovan and Mike Borfitz.  Shortly thereafter Paul Porter and Bill Pappas joined the group.  At this time Ray stepped down as chairman and Paul Porter assumed the leadership position.

Department Reports:

IT – Paul Porter:

The department will make recommendations to the president and any recommendations of significant size will be reviewed by the Board of Directors.

Current Activities:

.   Hans has moved the hosting of the web site to Microsoft.  Three volunteers have been recruited to help Hans and are still in the training stage.

.   Implemented a backup and recovery plan

.   In process of cleaning up the file server and slowly clean it up

.   Established a place to store all passwords, baseline documentation, etc., using DROPBOX.

Next Step:

.  Implement passwords for back office computers.  Twenty users have been identified who have business needs for those computers.  They will have icons and passwords on those computers.

They will have access to their files only.  They will be instructed on naming structure for their files.  They will have access on any of the 5 computers.

The contact people to resolve issues related to passwords and icons are Paul Porter and Bill Pappas.

.   Implementation will begin in October 2015 starting with one test computer in the back office.

.   There will be 3 public computers, 2 in the library and one in the break room

Questions from the audience:

Richard Castonguay asked “Will we have WI-FI”?  There is Wi-Fi, but it is not turned on and will not be.  It would use the small amount of bandwidth that is needed to run the shop and pose a security issue.  We have public computers that can access the internet.

Skip Banks asked about the names for the printers.  Anne will do this – she forgot last month.

Lumber – Steve Yovan

In process of ordering more lumber for the snow bird season.

Certification/Monitor Training, Mentoring – Dick Besler

We are caught up on certification with one upcoming class.  The certification team is getting excellent reviews from those members taking the class.

Monitor training will be August 19th and we are still on the normal schedule of the first and third Wednesdays of the month.

Education – Anne Bell

Sign up for Fall 2015 classes will begin on August 17.  If a class has a prerequisite, members need to be sure they have taken the prerequisite class or have approval from the instructor to take the class.  Instructors need to have approvals into Anne before Monday.

Office Administration – Anne Bell

On October 1st new Villages and Woodshop Addendum waivers are to be signed.

Dues will begin on October 12.  Members will sign up for 2016 monitor duty at that time and are asked to bring their calendars.  The MONITOR DUTY EXEMPTIONS  have been changed to age 80 (born before 1937), with 5 year membership in the club.

Nominating Committee – Anne Bell

We will be taking nominations for President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and 3 Board members.  Emails will be sent out to all members this month, along with short descriptions of each position.  Candidates will be asked to submit short resumes, and then interviews will be scheduled for October.

The committee recommendations will be presented to the BOD for approval.

Shop Administration – Dave Adamovich

The vacuums for the lathes have been clogging up.  The vacuums should only be used when sanding, not when turning.

Toys – Conway Williams

This month the department made 456 toys and have completed 2160 for the year, and are on target for 7000 toys this year.  A meeting with The Villages is scheduled for August 12 to talk about booths on the square.

Dan Pallo has stepped down as the manager of the Toy department and Conway has assumed the manager position.

Urn Project – Tom Miller

Another heartwarming story where we could help someone in need ….

The Sumter Count Veterans Administration called Tom.  A woman was destitute, her husband had been on dialysis for 8 years, and she needed an urn which she could not afford because she still owed $800.  Tom gladly said yes, we could supply the urn.  He then found out that someone else had called her and offered to pay her $800 bill.

Safety/Turners – John Herega

CPR classes will be offered this fall again.  A signup sheet will be at the front desk. Turners meeting will pick up next month again.

We have a new photographer – Bill Clements, and a new Videographer – Don Chute.

Members should let the safety committee know if they see any problems or have any issues.

Special Projects – Hans Zassenhaus

We took in 19 projects with a backlog of 40 projects.  We will start accepting new projects in September.  Hans will schedule 2 build nights to make card holders, slant boards, and rocker boards.

Break 7:49 – 8:00

Show and tell:

Frank Giaccone showed 2 beer top handles.

Pam McMann showed a winged bowl with a natural edge that she made in class.

Skip Banks showed two bowls, a South American themed bowl and a “mini innie” bowl similar to those made in Andy McTear’s class.
