General Meeting of the Villages Woodshop Club

President Jim Spallone called the meeting to order at 7pm accompanied by the recitation of the pledge of allegiance.  A moment of silence was held for Glenn Shaffer, Bob Chapman and Bill Provicier who recently passed away, as well for Bill Alhgren who’s the hospital.

 

 Welcomed four new members and one visitor in attendance .

 

President’s Report

 

Jim Spallone, President

·         We have 54 new members join in 2016 bringing our total membership to 863.

·          There was a good outcome of volunteers for the Special Projects build night on May 3rd. We’re selling an average of 140 card holders per month and it’s a challenge to keep up with the demand.

·          He and Mike Borfitz, who is chairing the creation of an Historical Video of the VWC, met with the founding fathers of the club today to document the who, what, when and how the club was formed.  Old photo’s of the club were provided by Lyle Mattheson and circulated for viewing.  This video will be on the VWC website and given to The Villages as well to preserve our club’s history.

·         There was a call for volunteers, explaining a lot activity goes on behind the scenes and back up volunteers are needed for key positions within the shop.

·         The golf cart path has been somewhat repaired with a small portion needing some additional work done.

·         Linda Samson reports that the Ladies of the Woodshop pool party a success.

 

Department Reports:

 

        Vice President – Harm Borfitz – No report.

 

Shop Administration – Dave Adamovich:  No report

 

Certification and Monitor Training – Dick Bessler:  Twenty members attended Monitor training this past month. We’re having a good turn out of members updating their monitor duty training.  There are eight members waiting for certification training with five scheduled in June.  The mentor program is moving along.

 

Lumber – Kevin Vanscoy for Stephan Yovan:  In the summer months the lumber orders slow down therefore, orders are delayed.  Don’t wait to the last minute to place your order.

 

Office Administration – Anne Bell:  No report

 

Member Merchandise – Bob Bell:  Gave a slide presentation on how to order member merchandise, special orders and explained the shipping and ordering process.  The VWC currently receives discounts from Sanding Glove, Rockler, Penn State and Woodcraft.

 

IT – Mike Borfitz:  Another member has joined the IT team to provide hardware support.   Still need a volunteer to assist and back up the Web Master.  IT is slowly moving to Window 10. They will purchase new computers  two per year.

 

Special Projects- Han Zassenhaus: May 3rd build night was a success with 12 volunteers and the building of 110 card holders and 50 slant boards. Which is just under months supply.  Another build night is needed. We took in $1700.21 in pre-made items this past month. Took in 91 new projects and competed 71.  A request was made for volunteers to work special projects. Six to eight volunteers are needed to regularly work special projects.  Turn over of the completion of special projects is needed because storing of the intake of special is space and safety issue.

 

Toys – Conway Williams: As of the end of the April 2438 toys were ready for shipping.  Toys on the Spanish Springs Square brought in $353 in donations. Next Toys on the Spanish Springs Square is set for May 30th,which will be the last one until September. 

The Toy Department fondly remembers Glenn Shaffer, who recently passed away, for his hard work and dedication in making toys.  Jo Harlo who heads up the painters, recently had surgery and is doing well.  

 

Video Equipment/ Videographer - Tom Miller:  No report

 

Urn Project – Tom Miller:  No report

 

President Board of Directors Bill McGinnis:  No report

 

Education Bob Matthew: No report  

 

Turners – John Herega: Ron Gammon will be the demonstrator at the next meeting.  Turner’s meetings will be suspended June, July and August due to the lack of participation.  Inventory recently completed, revealed a lot of tools and equipment are missing. John asked members to check their tool bags and garages to see if any tools may have inadvertently taken home. The new Stubby lathe is up and running. Video’s on the lathes have been completed and will be on the website next week.  Both of the Powermatic lathes will be down for 2 or 3 weeks to replace the bearings. 

 

Safety – John Herega: Recent incidents; a member lost a finger tip using the planer because he did not use both push sticks, minor incident on the sander and a member using a lathe accidental turned up the speed instead of turning off lathe and pieces came off hitting member is the face requiring stitches.  John reminded all to use the on and off button verses turning the speed to zero when working on the lathes and to use the facemask when turning.    John presented a 30 minute video on how to make picture frames and a 15 minute video on how to use the dual drum sander, using various sanding boards. 

 

Member Apparel – John Herega: Covered the process of how to order member apparel. We made need a new supplier/vendor since our present supplier is encountering health issues and not able to fill our orders.  The new Stubby lathe is up and running. Video’s on the lathes has been completed and will be on the website next week.  Both of the Powermatic lathes will be down for 2 or 3 weeks to replace the bearings.

 

New Business

No new business presented.

 

Show and Tell Items:  Carver Al showed his Viking design carved from butternut which sat on a granite base.  John Scott showed his toy pull cart with 48 blocks he made for his grandson. Sandy Moraco showed her Ring Master zebra bowl.  Ray Roberts showed his turned stacked bowl.

 

50/50:  Ron Gammon reported that $92 was taken in for the 50/50 raffle, with $46 to the club and $46 to the winners
