SAFETY COMMITTEE MINUTES

May 23, 2016

MEMBERS PRESENT

John  Herega           Dick Brady                Frank Woodward

John Scott                Paul Green               Charlie Amante

Jack Tagye                Harm Borfitz

BINDERS:

Will continue work on the binders when Kathy Howe returns.

FACE SHIELDS:

Discussed a recent accident when a bowl “exploded” on the lathe and an individual was struck by pieces of the bowl and received a serious cut on the facial area.  We will continue to stress the importance of using the face shields.

INSTRUCTORS:

No progress.

MESSAGE BOARD:

Frank Woodward has volunteered to take on this responsibility.

SAFET Y STRIPS:

Still some work to be done.

MONITORS:

After John Herega brought this issue to the Board of Directors, it was pointed out that to institute using three monitors during the peak season would be a problem

due to the number of monitors that would be required and so there will be no change.  However during the peak season we will try to add a third monitor if the numbers allow.

VIDEOS:

On hold for the summer.

TAPING OF THE FLOORS:

There is still more taping to be done.

JOINER/PUSH STICKS:

In light of the recent accident on the joiner where the use of the push sticks was ignored, it is obvious that further diligence and education is needed to enforce this requirement.

INCIDENT/ACCIDENT REPORTING:

The procedure for reporting incidents and accidents was discussed by the Safety Committee and some changes were suggested.  Harm Borfitz will process the changes and then submit the procedure and the associated report form to John Herega, Chairman of the Safety Committee, for approval.

MONITOR INCIDENT/AIR FILTRATION SYSTEM:

A letter from a monitor that was originally sent to Dave Adamovich and then forwarded to John Herega  was discussed by the Safety Committee.  It described how he developed a lung/breathing problem which resulted from breathing dust while emptying a drum from the air filtration system.  It seemed to center more on the response he received from a Safety Committee member when he brought it to his attention.  This was addressed in a memo from John to the individual and it seems to have satisfied the individual.  It should be noted that in the monitor instructions, there is a directive to always use a dust mask when working in a dusty environment.

SUSPENSION OF SUMMER MEETINGS:

The Safety Committee discussed and agreed that we should suspend meetings for the months of June, July, and August.  It should be noted that emergency meetings will be called as needed during this time period.
