General Membership Minutes

Meeting called to order at 7:03pm

 

After the Pledge of Allegiance and the Silent time, remembering the members and friends who need a little extra help the meeting proceeded.

 

Membership and Visitor tally:  The total of members for 2014 has reached 884.  As of this morning we have 352 members who have paid their dues for 2015.  A reminder that your dues will need to be paid by January 1 2015.  There is a grace period that extends to January 31.

 

Mike Borfitz introduced 7new members to the club.

 

Department reports:

 

Carvers:  Bill McGinnis is trying to get some of the Tuesday carvers to move to Wednesday as the carvers grow in numbers.  There are classes in Carving on Wednesday.

 

Certification and Monitor Training:  Dick Besler reported that there are five new members as of last week certification class.  There will be five people in this week’s class and five more on the 20th.

Dick asked all members if something gets damaged when they are working please tell someone.

Dick thanked the members for keeping the noise level down when Certification is going on.

Monitor training is on the first and third Wednesday of each month with a third class on the 4th Wednesday when needed.  There will be 3 sessions in the months of Dec., Jan., Feb., and March.

 

Education: Bob Mathews is working on the winter classes which will start about the 2nd week of January.

 

Shop Administration: Dave Adamovich informed the members that the 37” sander is down for repairs.

Anyone making a segmented bowl will need to use the small sander.

Dave has purchased a new redial arm saw that will be delivered in 6-10 weeks. This saw made in USA by Original is more user friendly.

Dave is to mark the plywood being stored in the back assembly room with a date on it.  If it is not removed by such date he will remove it.  Dave has requested that all members who have storage bins to please clean them out. The item stored in them should only be the current projects.

 

Urn Project: Tom Miller reported that Alvin shipped 38 urns this week to Tampa.  Anyone who wishes to make an Urn can do so.  It can be turned or it can be a wood working project.  Alvin and his helpers are working on 20 more that will be sent out by the 1st of December and then the workers will take of the month of December.  Tom took a few minutes to inform the new members about the Urn project.

 

Colonial Days:  Mike reminded everyone to keep January 20th open to participate in the Colonial Days at Brownwood.  Charlie Murray and Bob Bell can use any assistance you can give.

 

 

 

Christmas Party:  The party will be held on Monday December 8th at the Savannah Center at 6pm.

This is the night we celebrate the season, a good year and officially learn who the slate of officers are that have been nominated to run the VWC of 2015. The names of the candidates up for election to replace the three outgoing board members will be announced also.  The food and non-alcohol beverages will be provided by the club and club members.  Members can bring in any beverage that they like. 

 

Safety/Turners: John Herega asked that all members help keep the shop clean.  The floor gets very slipper when too much saw dust in on them.  John reminded everyone that the Turners meeting is on Tuesday November 18th at 7pm at the shop.  The demonstrator will be Nick Demone? He will be making a bird.

 

Board Comments: Jim Spallone reminded all members that at the December meeting (at Christmas Party) that the nominations for the three Board positions will be presented.  The voting will take place at the January meeting.  We need as many members as possible to attend both events.  The January meeting requires a quorum to vote.

The information will be posted on the website.

 

By-Law Differences and voting: Bob Rosen presented a power point presentation showing the changes in the by-laws being proposed to the membership.  After the presentation a motion was made to accept the changes.  A quorum was needed and fulfilled for the vote.

A motion was made by Bob Longmire and seconded by Tom Labbe to accept the changes.

The changes were accepted by a unanimous vote.

 

Special Projects:  Hans Zassenhaus took over the Special Project department the first of November.

There were 110 projects in Oct. and Nov.  100 new projects came in in with 72 outstanding as of today.

The shop has stopped taking any new projects in the month of Nov.  It was agreed that the shop would not be in completion with local merchants.  We will no longer do large projects that can be down by locals or purchased.

Special Projects will continue to do the charitable projects and all of the small items we make to sell.  Hans will computerize the department so none of the items get lost in the cracks.  Hans needs some volunteers to help with getting the projects done in a timely manner.  If you can donate a few hours at any time please see Hans.

 

Judy Kelly brought in a doll house last year that she could not put together.  She asked if anyone would like to take on the project.  Tom Johnson took the doll house home and spent 400 hours putting it together.  Bob did a power point presentation of the different stages through the last year and a half.  The completed doll house was presented to Judy Kelly at the meeting.

Toys: Ron Gammon:  The toy display will be on the square on Thursday Nov. 13th.  Dan Pallo is looking for volunteers to help complete this year’s order for the needy children.

 

Show and Tell:

Hans Zassenhaus made a table out of cherry and inlayed river glass on the top

Tom Miller did two vases made from Norfolk Island pine.

Low Datson made a bench table from ash and oak

Raymond had some small that he carved: a duck, Halloween pumpkin, Irishman, Santa, snowman, bookworm, bear and a fox mad from bass word

Ron Gammon made some bracelets which he donated to the Christmas tree

Tom Labbe caved a plaque that he framed

A segmented platter made from maple and mahogany

John and Bob showed a carved Santa and bear explaining how easy it is to learn to carve

Guitar made from maple, mahogany and spruce.

 

A beautiful piece of wood was donated to the shop by   ?  and it was auctioned off.  The bidding started at $30 and Andy McTear got it for $80.  Thank you Andy.
