Intro to Lumber Ops

   Dave Gessner

You may have noticed that the selection of exotic lumber has expanded over the last couple of months at both facilities. We have been diligently looking for vendors that can provide kiln dried specialty wood at a decent price and we now carry 12 varieties of exotic flat stock, 14 varieties of turning blanks (both green and dried) and both walnut and cedar cookie slices. This is in addition to our normal supply of 13 varieties of common hard woods. Please remember that members are welcome to use wood that has been personally sourced if it is kiln dried or air dried below 12%.

You may have seen some new faces on lumber sales at both Rolling Acres and Brownwood. A very special thanks to Garry Muratore who is moving into the lead role at Rolling Acres and giving Scott Herlick a much-needed break. And a world of thanks to Scott for his leadership over the past. Also joining in Brownwood is Janet Fiorina, Pete Liebig, Gregg Norton and Barb Flosdorf. As everyone knows, the VWC operates only by volunteers, and we can’t thank these folks enough for stepping forward.

Folks in Rolling Acres may have noticed over the last couple of weeks that the wood inventory is coming down. This is in anticipation of the facility closing in early October. We will try to keep an ample supply of most common wood varieties but please let us know if you need any materials relocated from Brownwood to finish up your projects.

Lumber Ordering and Storage

Our lumber operations manager and his assistants will serve your needs for lumber of any type thickness and length.  We stock the most common wood species and thicknesses for immediate use by our members.  For lumber in stock, simply get in touch with any of the Lumber Team.

However, members can order lumber by contacting the Front Desk and completing an order form.  You will need to pay for any lumber you order at the time of delivery.

The only restriction on ordering lumber is that we will not stock nor order Pressure Treated lumber. Only lumber NOT treated with green cyanide salts is permitted in the shop.  You can use lumber such as "Yellow Wood" in the shop.
